As Paddy once did the same with some success, I shall be putting up a sheet in the dining hall for morning meal suggestions.  Food from home, personal favourites and the like.  I will take up ideas for breakfast once or twice a week, if supplies allow...any other suggestions will necessarily be left to the discretion of Una and Miss Parker. 

As always, the breakfast and lunch shifts are understaffed to some degree.

On a different note, have we acquired any chess or checkers players, of late?  It has been some time since I have challenged a new opponent.

Una and I could definitely benefit from having another pair of hands available for the evening shift, as long as Miss Parker is indisposed.

On a more permanent basis, however...I fear that Inmates would be even less inclined towards kitchen work if they know Wardens are prepared to make up the shortfall. Even now, nephew, many see it as beneath them.

Fish would be rather nice. [Over a year on the Barge and fish is the only real food that Narvin has come to tolerate so far. It doesn't occur to him that fish for breakfast might be rather odd.]

It is always good to come across a man of many disciplines. I am, I admit, something of a novice at Go - I would relish the challenge.

And I'm in full support of adding some suggestions to the menu occasionally. I have some recipes that I was tempted to pass along to the kitchens anyway, as I'm disappointed that they go so frequently unused.

There isn't, but judging by the breadth of interest, I believe that there should be. Something to consider, I believe - a friendly tournament, perhaps. A form of sparring for those of us less given to physical confrontation.

In the meantime, if you are happy to test your skills, I will be more than happy to test them.

What duties would one expect to be burdened with should one lack any experience in a kitchen? Get underfoot, I'd expect.

Not at all. Even our least experienced new staff pick things up very quickly.

I imagine that Miss Parker and Una may manage things differently, but on my shift a new volunteer would learn a few simple tasks, usually by watching others. Then they move on to more complex jobs as they feel able to do so - just as one learns any other skill. As to the precise nature of those tasks, some people are more comfortable with preparation, others with washing, some with delivering food to their shipmates. I try to cater to what people would prefer to do.
